The continent, threatened by economic crisis and xenophobic nationalism and challenged by new conflicts and wars at its borders, is no longer certain of its own identity and destiny. Politicians talk about Europe while the masses seem to clamour for change, for revolution, for something. Perhaps just something else.
Monika Grütters, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, discusses with Heinrich Detering, the President of the German Academy for Language and Literature, the foreboding challenges Germany and other European nations are facing today.
